Yoshinkan Dojo, Southern England Branch

We are a traditionally focused Japanese Bujutsu (Martial Arts) Dojo located in Crondall Village, between Fleet and Farnham, on the Surrey and Hants border.

Motoha Yoshin Ryu Jujutsu, Kata practice in the Dojo

Our name was given to us by Yasumoto Sensei, Soke of the Motoha Yoshin Ryu school of Jujutsu, Eikoku Nanbu Yoshinkan Shibu Dojo - Yoshinkan Dojo, Southern England Branch.

Our practice generally includes the following elements;

Jujutsu - The method of suppleness, striking, throwing, grappling and choking. Motoha Yoshin Ryu Jujutsu is the main focus within our Dojo.

Bojutsu - Techniques of the wooden staff (Chobo & Hanbo,) our Bojutsu comes from Kukishin Ryu which has strong connections with the Hontai Yoshin Ryu, Takagi Ryu.

Kenjutsu / Iaijutsu - Techniques of the Japanese sword based on the All Japan Kendo Federation (including Kodachi or short sword)

While these may seem like different martial arts in their own rite (which they can be) our method of practice brings them all together as different parts of the same whole. Practice of each element holds lessons that can be applied across the spectrum, resulting in a truly solid grasp of the Japanese Martial Arts.

We have a beautiful location for training, off the beaten path and with a real Japanese Dojo feel to the interior. We also have access to a beautiful outside location for our summer weapons practice. Authentic training in an authentic setting.

Please see below;

We have a friendly, no nonsense approach to training, which is conducted safely in a traditional manner. Suitable for anyone, from beginners right through to experienced martial artists, regardless of size or current fitness levels.

Our focus is not on sport martial arts, or flashy moves, and our attitude towards self defence is quite different to many other organisations.

In our Dojo you will find a serious and common sense approach to actual fighting. Our aim is to give students real life skills (physical and mental) which will give them confidence and enable them to handle themselves in violent, potentially life threatening situations.

The same skills used by Samurai for generations to stay alive in a culture where death and killing was an accepted way of life, on and off the battlefield.

We teach both adults and juniors/teens maintaining a real family feel to the Dojo as many of our adults also have their children practicing, this creates a great atmosphere and a rare chance to bond over a mutual interest.

With a direct connection to our Hombu Dojo in Japan, our students regularly visit for training, and to experience the country and unique culture, Yasumoto Soke has also visited our Dojo.

This additional experience within the Dojo makes a real difference to the style of practice we offer.

We also arrange various Cultural experiences to highlight this difference in our approach to the study of Japanese Martial Arts.

Our Dojo has been blessed by a Priest of Japanese Tendai Buddhism, with a full ceremony and following talk for our students which was a great experience for them.

We have also arranged Shodo (Japanese Calligraphy) workshops, and fantastic demonstrations with a Japanese Master Calligrapher for our students via a yearly seminar that we host.

We also observe certain traditions such as Hatsu Geiko (First Training) in the New Year, with a focus on giving your best to set you up for the year ahead.
